Celebrating Its 75th Anniversary
The University of San Diego (USD), a liberal arts institution of higher education grounded in the Catholic Intellectual tradition, will showcase a deeper understanding of its impact and influence – past, present and future – throughout 2024, the 75th anniversary of its 1949 founding.
Strong collaboration between co-founders, inaugural San Diego Catholic Bishop Charles F. Buddy, and Mother Rosalie Hill, RSCJ, brought the vision of Catholic higher education to San Diego. The initial connection was in 1937 when Buddy visited the Mother Hill and RSCJ-founded San Francisco College for Women. It was not until 1942 when having a San Diego College for Women was discussed.
Steady leadership, via Buddy’s local connections and influence and Hill’s organized, meticulous ways and experience in San Francisco, brought their vision to life.
In 1945, Bishop Buddy and the Diocese purchased the land and offered a generous portion to Mother Hill and the RSCJ. Construction on the initial campus began in late 1949 and Hill incorporated a 16th century Spanish Renaissance architecture theme that still exists today.
College for Women’s first classes were February 12, 1952 with 50 students. College for Men and School of Law opened in 1954. Eventually, a desire to streamline services to create financial stability and the students’ preference for a co-educational college led to a merger the State of California approved in 1972. Inaugural USD President Author E. Hughes provided key leadership for it.
The merger brought forth its official name, University of San Diego, and for many years it has been recognized as one of the country’s most beautiful campuses. Top students here continue to light the way forward.
“There are three things significant in education: beauty, goodness and truth,” Mother Hill once said. “But the only one that attracts people on sight is beauty. If beauty attracts people, they will come and find the truth and have goodness communicated to them by the kind of people here.”

La Universidad de San Diego (USD) es una institución de educación superior en artes libres con base en la tradición educativa católica, que durante el 2024 festeja sus 75 años de trayectoria desde su fundación en 1949, y hará presentaciones sobre su profundo impacto e influencia, tanto en el pasado como el presente y futuro.
Los fundadores, Obispo católico de San Diego, Charles B. Buddy y la Madre Rosarie Hill, RSCJ, se unieron para traer a San Diego la educación católica universitaria. El primer contacto se llevó a cabo en 1937, cuando Buddy visitó a la Madre Hill y al RSCJ San Francisco College for Women. Recién en 1942 se debatió el tema de la fundación del San Diego College for Women.
Bajo un firme liderazgo, gracias a las conexiones de Buddy y la meticulosa y experimentada organización que Hill había llevado adelante en San Francisco, se puso en marcha esta visión educativa.
En 1945, el Obispo Buddy y la diócesis compraron el terreno y le ofrecieron a la Madre Hill una porción del mismo al RSCJ. La construcción se inició a fines del 1949 y Hill incorpora la arquitectura renacentista española del S XVI al diseño, estilo que perdura hasta la fecha.
Las primeras clases del College for Women se comenzaron a dictar el 12 de febrero de 1950 con la presencia de 50 estudiantes. College for Men and School of Law abrió sus puertas en 1954. Eventualmente, el deseo de lograr la estabilidad financiera y la preferencia por la educación mixta llevó a la unificación de ambos College, lo que fue aprobado por el Estado de California en 1972, bajo el fundamental liderazgo del primer presidente de la USD, el autor E. Hughes.
La unificación fue lo que nos lleva a su actual denominación, University of San Diego, institución que durante muchos años ha sido reconocida como la dueña de uno de los campus más hermosos del país. Los estudiantes más destacados de la institución siguen siendo líderes destacados.
“Existen tres temas significativos en la educación: la belleza, la bondad y la verdad” comentó en su momento la Madre Hill. “Pero la única que atrae a las personas es la belleza. Si la belleza atrae a las personas, ellas vendrán y encontrarán la verdad y tendrán la bondad comunicada por las buenas personas de este lugar.”
