The Show Must Go On
Academy of Our Lady of Peace Original Play on Women’s Suffrage Adapts to COVID-19 Pandemic
In 2020, students at San Diego’s oldest all-girl’s high school, the Academy of Our Lady of Peace, embarked on developing the school’s first original play, but when it became clear that holding an on-campus production as normal would be impossible due to COVID-19, the girls were quick to innovate.
Social studies department chair and alumna of the school, Emily Devereaux, approached drama director Justin Tracy with the idea of telling the story of women’s suffrage to commemorate the centennial of the passage of the 19th Amendment. Immediately, they formed teams of student researchers and playwrights.
Shortly after, the school was moved to virtual learning in light of COVID-19. The group decided that cancelling the production was not an option and continued their work remotely. “I knew that we had to put a show on, and I thought this would be a great opportunity to do something different. It is hard to overstate how excited the students got about this. I had a lot of students tell me that this is the thing that has helped them get through this difficult time,” Tracy said.
The researchers conducted a close inquiry into the moments in history most critical to the Women’s Suffrage Movement. They shared their findings with the student writers, who worked with playwright ShaWanna Renee Rivon to develop monologues and dialogues that captured the long and difficult journey to suffrage.
When the school’s campus reopened, the team was faced with a new challenge. COVID-19 restrictions meant they would not be able to perform the play as a live production. The group pivoted to filming and making it available as a Video on Demand. Following safety protocols, actors were filmed one at a time in front of a green-screen which allowed post-production to set the scene anywhere using illustrated backgrounds. Scenes in which characters were in conversation were cut together with each actor in Zoom-style boxes.
Adapting to COVID-19 is a challenge, but at OLP it has also been an opportunity to innovate. The students worked tirelessly to develop this show. By bringing the major events in the suffrage movement to life in an original production, they hope to show the lengthy fight suffragists participated in to ensure the right to vote for women and, ultimately, encourage everyone to exercise their right to vote.

En el 2020, las estudiantes de la escuela de niñas más antigua de San Diego, Academy of Our Lady of Peace, se embarcó en el desarrollo de su primera obra original, pero cuando se vio que realizar la presentación en el campus de la escuela, como normalmente se realizaba, este año sería imposible debido al COVID -19, las alumnas reaccionaron con rapidez frente al obstáculo.
La Jefa del Departamento de Estudios Sociales y ex alumna de la escuela, Emily Devereaux, se acercó al director de teatro Justin Tracy con la idea de presentar la historia del sufragio femenino y así conmemorar el centenario de la 19° Enmienda. Inmediatamente se organizaron equipos de estudiantes para investigar y escribir la obra.
Poco tiempo después la escuela pasó al sistema de aprendizaje virtual debido al COVID-19. El grupo decidió que el cancelar la producción no estaba dentro de las opciones y continuaron su trabajo de manera remota. “Sabía que teníamos que presentar la obra y que sería una oportunidad de hacer algo diferente, es difícil explicar lo nerviosas que estaban las alumnas sobre esto. Muchas de ellas me comentaron cómo este proyecto las ayudó a sobrellevar esto tiempos difíciles “comenta Tracy.
El equipo de las investigadoras se dedicó a recabar información sobre los momentos históricos y más críticos del movimiento de sufragistas femeninas, compartiendo sus descubrimientos con el equipo de escritoras, que trabajaron junto a la dramaturga ShaWanna Renee Rivon para desarrollar los diálogos y monólogos que capturaron el largo y difícil camino hacia el sufragio femenino.
Cuando el campus de la escuela reabrió sus puertas, el equipo se vio confrontado con un nuevo desafío, las restricciones del COVID-19 significaban que no podrían presentan la obra de manera presencial. El grupo decidió volcarse a la filmación y ofrecer el video bajo demanda. Siguiendo los protocolos de seguridad, los actores fueron filmados de a uno frente a una pantalla verde, que luego permitió la post producción y la ubicación de la escena donde fuera necesaria. En las escenas en donde los personajes dialogaban, estos fueron puesto dentro de recuadros tipo los de “zoom”.
Adaptarse al COVID-19 es un desafío, pero para OLP fue una oportunidad para innovar. Las estudiantes trabajaron incansablemente para realizar esta obra. Al traer a la vida los más importantes momentos de la lucha por el sufragio femenino dentro de una esmerada producción original, ellas esperan mostrar la larga y difícil lucha a las que las sufragistas se vieron forzadas para asegurarles a las mujeres el derecho a votar y también, fomentar en toda la población la importancia de ejercer ese derecho.
