The Randy Jones Run/Walk for Independence!
Randy Jones, one of San Diego’s baseball legends, thrilled fans with his fast pace-of-play and skillful sinker. In 1976, he won baseball’s highest-pitching honor, the Cy Young Award. Randy remains a hero to this day for Padres fans, but to Home of Guiding Hands, he is so much more.
Randy has been supporting Home of Guiding Hands (HGH) since the 70s when he broke into the major leagues with the Padres. The non-profit ran a greenhouse as part of their vocational training program, where Randy made weekly trips while building his home. In doing so, he met several of the HGH clients and learned a lot about the organization. He knew then that he would stay involved with HGH for many years to come.
This year marks the 10th Annual Randy Jones Run/Walk for Independence. And yes, Randy will be there generously signing autographs and posing for pictures with the participants. “To see this community come together to help Home of Guiding Hands touches my heart. I have been impressed for years with their ability to help children and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. They provide those who need it a purpose. It is essential to give back to a group of exceptional people that deserve more acknowledgement and funding,” Randy shared with GB Magazine. Thanks to Randy and his leadership in the community, HGH has raised well-over $300,000 since this family fun event began.
The event takes place on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at Crown Point Park. It is a 5K run, walk & roll along the scenic Mission Bay Park. Registration begins at 7:30 AM allowing enough time for guests to grab their shirts, enjoy breakfast, and participate in the warm-up. The race begins at 8:30 AM with a send-off from Tammy & John of KSON radio and wrap-ups from the team at 97.3 The Fan. The entry fee is only $25, and for those who cannot attend, they are encouraged to sponsor a client.
The run, walk & roll is a family-friendly event designed for the serious runner, the casual walker, and anyone and everyone who wants to participate. Everyone will receive a medal when they come through the finish line making everyone a winner! Several of the HGH clients look forward to participating and have collected medals since the event’s inception. They take great pride in crossing that finish line with their teammates.
HGH is one of San Diego County’s largest providers of supports and services for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Their programs benefit more than 3,800 infants, children and adults each year.
