Sara Boquin Changing the World, One Student At A Time
Eight years ago, Barrio Logan College Institute embarked on an ambitious expansion to help hundreds of additional families realize the dream of a college education for their children. To help lead that growth, BLCI hired its first Chief Operating Officer, Sara Boquin. Since then, BLCI has grown from serving 240 first-generation college students to over 750 students in Chula Vista, El Cajon and Barrio Logan. BLCI is now proud to call Sara its Chief Executive Officer.
Sara’s story embodies BLCI’s mission and her favorite quote by Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” She spent part of her childhood in Honduras, where she learned the culture, language and hardships of living in an impoverished country. Like many families served by BLCI, Sara’s parents migrated to California seeking a better future and a better education for their daughters. Both Sara and her sister earned Bachelor’s degrees in the University of California system. Sara also earned a Master’s degree in Latin American Studies. Her path was not easy – she struggled with the college application process, affording tuition, room and board, and understanding financial aid – all things that BLCI provides to the families it serves all the way through college graduation. “Many first-generation college students can succeed in college,” Sara shared with GB Magazine. “Whether they earn a degree depends on the support around them, which is difficult to find when no one in your family has been to college.”
With over 20 years of experience working with first-generation students enrolled at San Diego State University and the University of San Diego, Sara admires BLCI’s special connection to BLCI’s parents. “BLCI parents fully support education in their families, but they often need their children to work full-time and help care for their younger siblings,” said Sara. “At BLCI, we help parents balance the needs of today with building a better tomorrow through their children’s college education.”
Sara is committed to improving the lives of families through education. BLCI is proud that she leads a team working every day to ensure that a family’s zip code does not determine their access to higher education.
Hace ocho años, el Barrio Logan College Institute se embarcó en un ambicioso proyecto de expansión para lograr que cientos de las familias adicionales lleven adelante el sueño del acceso a la educación universitaria para sus hijos. Con el objetivo de liderar este crecimiento, BLCI contrató a su primera gerente de operaciones, Sara Boquin. Desde entonces, BLCI ha crecido de 240 a 750 estudiantes que lograron ser la primera generación universitaria de familias de Chula Vista, El Cajón y Barrio Logan. Hoy en día, BLCI tiene el orgullo de llamar a Sara su Gerente Ejecutiva.
La historia de Sara sintetiza la misión de BLCI y su frase favorita de Nelson Mandela: “la educación es el arma más poderosa que se puede utilizar para cambiar el mundo”. Sara pasó parte de su infancia en Honduras, donde aprendió su cultura, idioma y las dificultades que implican vivir en un país empobrecido. Como muchas de las familias de BLCI, los padres de Sara emigraron a California buscando un mejor futuro y mejor educación para sus hijas. Tanto Sara como su hermana lograron títulos de bachillerato de la Universidad de California. Sara después obtuvo una maestría en Estudios Latinoamericanos, pero su camino no fue fácil, padeció el complejo proceso de inscripción, las clases pagas, el hospedaje y el entender la asistencia financiera disponible, todos elementos que BLCI les ofrece a las familias a las que asiste durante el proceso universitario. “Muchas primeras generaciones universitarias pueden tener éxito, pero si logran el titulo tiene que ver con el apoyo que reciben en su entorno, lo cual es más difícil cuando en tu familia no han asistido a la universidad” le comparte a la revista GB.
Con más de 20 años de experiencia trabajando con primera generación de estudiantes inscriptos en la Universidad Estatal de San Diego y en la Universidad de San Diego, Sara admira la especial conexión que tiene BLCI con los padres de sus alumnos. “Los padres de BLCI apoyan totalmente la educación, pero muchas veces necesitan que sus hijos trabajen horarios completos y ayuden a cuidar de sus hermanos. En BLCI ayudamos a los padres a que logren un equilibrio entre las necesidades del presente y el poder construir un mejor mañana gracias a la educación universitaria de sus hijos”, comenta Sara.
Sara tiene un profundo compromiso con lograr mejorar las vidas de las familias a través de la educación y BLCI está orgulloso de tenerla liderando un equipo de trabajo que asegura a las familias el no tener su educación limitada por pertenecer a una determinada zona postal.
