San Diego Botanic Garden (SDBG) in Encinitas is more than just a beautiful place. Focused on sharing plant wisdom with people of all backgrounds and ages, the Garden has prioritized growing its education, science and conservation programs, which now extend well beyond the Garden’s 37 acres.
Education & Community Outreach
Onsite children’s offerings such as SAPLinGS (Science, Art, and PLay in Garden Spaces) invite budding gardeners to explore nature through hands-on activities, while offsite projects like the Ocean Knoll Canyon Restoration project, engage hundreds of students to learn about habitat restoration with staff. Important programs like Access Afternoons and Museums for All allow the Garden to welcome thousands of visitors from underserved communities each year to ensure access to nature, learning and beauty for everyone.
Science & Conservation
Science and conservation continue to be key pillars as the Garden works to address environmental challenges, from climate change to food insecurity. With a focus on protecting and sustainably utilizing California native plants, medicinal plants and food and agricultural plants, SDBG is actively involved in more than 20 projects that have local and global impacts. Highlights include conserving rare plants found in the US-Mexico borderlands around Otay Mountain Wilderness, the creation of a national medicinal plants collection and research to help inform global strategies for the conservation and use of plants in food and agriculture.
Exhibitions
Presenting world class horticulture displays and immersive experiences throughout the year, there is always something to discover at the Garden. Highlights this season include the fascinating Savage Gardens exhibition on display through October 29 featuring hundreds of real carnivorous plants along with three larger-than-life sculpture installations, and the return of Lightscape, a dazzling after-dark winter experience unlike any other.
