Opportunity For Impact
Since 1996, Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI) has been breaking the cycle of poverty by preparing underserved students to be the first in their families to go to college. To date, 100% of students who have completed the college success curriculum have enrolled in college.
On average, it costs approximately $5,000 per student, per year, to provide these life changing programs that begin in 3rd grade. On Thursday, May 11th BLCI will host the Opportunity for Impact at Bali Hai. The event showcases the student’s success while raising funds to support BLCI’s college completion programs and expansion efforts to meet the growing demand to increase the capacity at BLCI El Cajon and Chula Vista locations.
The event provides members of the community an opportunity to make an impact of their own and change lives for students like Denise who will be attending college in 2025, “I feel so ready for college. This program is the step I needed to take, and I don’t feel like it is a huge, big scary abyss, but more like something I’ve been preparing for forever. If I hadn’t joined BLCI, I don’t think I would be at the top 10% of my class or would’ve had the drive and motivation to work towards it.”
A special addition this year is the recognition of BLCI Board member, Andy Achterkirchen as Honorary Chair. In addition to serving on the board, Andy returns as the Exclusive Presenting Sponsor for the second year in a row and has been a BLCI mathematics tutor for 25 years. Andy’s support has made a difference in countless students’ lives and the event will include a special recognition from BLCI staff and students throughout the years.

Desde 1996, el Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI) viene rompiendo con el círculo vicioso de pobreza por medio de la educación, acompañando a estudiantes de bajos recursos en el proceso de convertirse en los primeros de sus familias en asistir a la universidad. Hasta la fecha, el 100% de sus alumnos han completado la currícula de éxito universitario y han logrado ingresar a la universidad.
Este programa que se inicia en 3° grado, que tiene un costo promedio anual por alumno de $5,000, logra cambios radicales en sus vidas. El jueves 11 de mayo, BLCI va a llevar a delante Opportunity for Impact en Bali Hai. Durante el evento se presentan éxitos de sus alumnos y a la vez, se recaudan fondos para continuar apoyando los programas y esfuerzos de expansión de BLCI y así llegar a la creciente demanda por aumentar la capacidad de las instalaciones de El Cajón y Chula Vista.
El evento brinda a los miembros de la comunidad la oportunidad de hacer la diferencia y lograr un impacto positivo cambiando las vidas de estudiantes como Denise, quien asistirá a la universidad en el 2025 “me siento absolutamente preparada para la universidad. Este programa era lo que necesitaba y ya no siento que sea un terrible abismo lo que me separa sino algo a lo que me vengo preparando desde hace una vida. Si no me hubiese unido a BLCI, no creo que hubiese podido estar entre el 10% de los mejores alumnos de mi clase o haber tenido la motivación para luchar por ello”.
Este año se realizará un reconocimiento especial a Andy Achterkirchen, miembro de la comisión directiva y presidente honorario. Además de trabajar en la comisión directiva, Andy vuelve por segundo año consecutivo como Patrocinador Presentador Exclusivo luego de 25 años siendo tutor de matemáticas en BLCI. El apoyo de Andy ha hecho la diferencia en innumerables alumnos y este evento quiere brindarle un reconocimiento especial por parte de BLCI y de los alumnos que han pasado por sus clases.
