Mainly Mozart All-Star Orchestra Returns To Del Mar Surf Cup
The largest gathering of concertmasters and principal players in North America returns to the Del Mar Surf Cup September 11-18 for five open-air performances, including an Opening Night commemorating the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
The Mainly Mozart All-Star Orchestra takes the stage Saturday, September 11 in a benefit concert entitled “The Path Forward” featuring saxophone legend Branford Marsalis, in collaboration with The National Conflict Resolution Center.
“For The Path Forward, pieces such as Mozart’s Figaro Overture and Tchaikovsky’s “Mozartiana” Suite reflect our established tradition,” said David Chan, conductor and Mainly Mozart Artistic Partner. “Other works were selected to show where we’ve been as a country, and more importantly, where we still need to go. George Walker’s gravely beautiful Lyric for Strings was dedicated to his grandmother who actually lived in the era of slavery, while the last of Peter Lieberson’s haunting Neruda Songs is a reminder of the collective sense of loss on the anniversary of 9/11.”
Tables-for-four for September 11 are $500, $750 and $1,000, all with hosted wine and charcuterie. $1,000 level tables include dinner and post-concert artist meet-and-greet. Seating in pods-for-four is $150 per pod in section A (two Adirondack chairs provided) and $75 per pod in section B.
The Festival continues Sunday, September 12 with “A Taste of Paris”, Tuesday September 14 with “Mozart & Haydn”, Friday, September 17 with “Four Horns”, and closes Saturday, September 18 with “Closing Night at the Opera.” “Programming for the rest of the week provides ample opportunity for the individual talents of our All-Star Orchestra to shine,” said Chan. “The week culminates with a unique operatic narrative program, which takes us on a brilliant and tuneful – but purely instrumental – journey through the world of opera.”
“After 32 years of producing one annual festival, to have produced five orchestral festivals in twelve months is incredibly exciting,” Mainly Mozart co-founder and CEO Nancy Laturno shared with GB Magazine. “But audiences have clamored for it, donors have supported our efforts to keep live music alive throughout COVID, and musicians have celebrated making music again with their colleagues. We have developed a new presence in North County, and we plan to continue investing in that.”
Subscriptions for the four-concert series are $1750 for tables-for four; $420 for section A pod-for-four; $150 for section B pod-for-four. Single tickets are $500 per table-for-four; $120 section A pod-for-four; $49 section B pod-for-four. All concerts start at 7:30 pm on September 11 and 12.
