Supporting Families through San Diego’s Economic Recovery
As a young, single mother, Norma* knew she needed to provide for her family, but she was not sure what she wanted to do for a career, or where to start. She heard about MAAC’s Unidos in Finance workforce training program through an outreach coordinator and decided to apply. The eight-week course included financial education, mock business interviews, and one-on-one coaching which prepared Norma to quickly secure a teller position at a local bank. She then was promoted to a full-time customer service representative at the same bank. “This program really opened my eyes, showing me what I am capable of doing. I want my daughter to be proud of me as her mother and provider, and I am proud to be working in the financial industry,” Norma shared with GB Magazine.

For 56 years, MAAC has provided comprehensive social services and programs across San Diego County to ensure individuals like Norma can thrive. When the pandemic hit in March 2020, the families in MAAC’s care needed support more than ever – and the organization stepped up, increasing services and resources even as the world shut down.

In the past year, MAAC reaffirmed its commitment to creating a brighter future for all San Diegans by expanding its workforce development programs to support those seeking new careers or financial advancement. Training programs, such as Unidos in Finance and Next Level, help youth and adults to obtain the necessary experience, certifications and skills needed for higher-paying and family-sustaining careers in fields such as building trades, healthcare, early childhood education and financial services. Additionally, MAAC offers supportive services like mental health support, childcare, food and housing assistance to help program participants overcome barriers to employment.

As the region moves towards economic recovery, MAAC continues to address inequities by providing resources and services in its five key areas of focus: Economic Development, Education, Health & Well-Being, Housing, and Advocacy & Leadership Development. Through collaborations with community partners in each of these sectors, MAAC is ensuring equitable access to quality programs that help individuals and families achieve economic mobility while building vibrant communities throughout the county.
