Contemporary Art For All

It is not every day that you can walk into an art museum for free, but the Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego (ICA San Diego) opened its doors over a year ago, and those doors remain open to everyone, thanks to its Everyday Equity Admission initiative and free public engagement programs. A merger of two local institutions – Lux Art Institute in Encinitas (established 1998) and the San Diego Art Institute in Balboa Park (established 1941) – ICA San Diego breaks down barriers to make art accessible to everyone. Embodying both organizations’ shared commitments to support living artists, through stipends and new commissioned work, ICA San Diego features 11 exhibitions each season, including 4 artists in residence and unique curated experiences that engage our community with contemporary art.

This year, believing that uplifting youth inspires generational change, ICA San Diego will expand the Valise Project. This program brings museum-quality art education into Title-I classrooms for over 3000 students and encourages a follow-up field trip to one of ICA San Diego’s campuses, made possible by Art Bus Xpress and the Linda Brandes Foundation. Additionally, ICA San Diego seeks to grow its Patti Cooprider Scholarship Program for underserved military, disabled, foster and marginalized children. With your help, countless students will experience art in life-shaping ways.

ICA San Diego commits itself to questioning the world around us, providing an outlet for our community’s self-expression, emotions and wellness. ICA San Diego uses art as a vehicle – a way to create points of access, cultivate understanding, offer equity, celebrate diversity and build unity for the San Diego community. With your support, ICA San Diego will remain inclusive of everyone, believing art can be a transformative tool in our society – to understand the world around us and within us, to build a more equitable cultural ecosystem and united community.
