Episcopal Community Services (ECS) celebrates its selection as the recipient of the University of San Diego’s (USD) 2023 Kaleidoscope Award for Good Governance for large nonprofit organizations. This award, which is managed by The Nonprofit Institute (NPI), USD’s graduate-level management program tailored to nonprofit professionals, recognizes and promotes outstanding board governance in the San Diego region.

NPI announced the award selection at their 19th Annual Nonprofit Governance Symposium in January, and several ECS board and staff members were in attendance to receive the award and participate in workshops and sessions to learn new tools for growth and transformation.

Since 1927, ECS has been working toward a more vibrant and just San Diego community. ECS focuses on services for homelessness, behavioral health, substance use disorders, and early childhood education, impacting over 7,000 residents each year.

At ECS, the board partners with staff to create strategic think tanks for various aspects of the organization, from funding and development to early childhood education. In the last two years, new policies, procedures and initiatives were implemented to empower the board as a dynamic group of professionals who volunteer their time and talent to support ECS’s mission of breaking barriers and transforming communities. Some of the critical changes include transitioning to a self-perpetuating board, members voting on decisions, diversifying the board to reflect ECS families and clients, and strategic planning with leadership staff.

Board members are committed to ECS’s vision of having an abundant and equitable society where all have unlimited potential. ECS is grateful for NPI’s recognition of the diligent work of its board and thankful for the prestigious Kaleidoscope Award. If you are interested in serving as an ECS board member or working on one of their subcommittees, please contact ECS and speak with Barbara Soto.

The Moonlight Ball will raise critical funds to support ECS programs that provide vital services to individuals and families facing homelessness, behavioral health issues, substance use disorders (SUD), and early childhood education needs. This event will celebrate last year’s successes, highlight the inspiring stories of former clients who’ve flourished since completing ECS programs, and showcase the bright future ahead.
