Leading the fight to overcome epilepsy
One in ten people will experience a seizure in their lifetime and another one in twenty-six will be diagnosed with epilepsy.
The Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County (EFSDC) leads the fight to overcome the challenges of living with epilepsy and to accelerate therapies to stop seizures, find cures and save lives. EFSDC provides all programs and services free of charge, including counseling, career development, advocacy information and referrals, as well as support groups for individuals, caregivers and families, scholarships and summer camps for children and teens.
To support its mission, it recently hosted its 24th Annual Sharon’s Ride.Run.Walk. event in Mission Bay. This community awareness and fundraising event hosted more than 650 bike riders, runners and walkers for a morning filled with family fun and activities including a visit from the San Diego Fire Department!
The organization hosted meet ups for both teen and young adult clients in addition to an information booth staffed by their programs team to help attendees with resources and programming options, including support groups in English and Spanish.
“Sharon’s Ride has not only become a major awareness and fundraising initiative, but a spring tradition for our community to come together outside in beautiful Mission Bay for a morning of fitness, food and fun,” Wendy Urushima-Conn, president and chief executive officer of the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County shared with GB Magazine.
A Sponsor Marketplace included representatives from many sponsors including SK Life and Neurelis at the highest level, and from Sunovion, The Neurology Center, Jazz Pharmaceuticals, UCB, Dispatch Health and Marinus. Thanks to friends at Pedal Ahead, they were able to raffle of an electric bicycle to an excited crowd who were well-hydrated thanks to Sycuan Casino and Resort!
The Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County serves the more than 55,000 people in our community who are living with epilepsy, as well as their loved ones are caretakers. All services are provided free of charge to anyone who needs them.
Upcoming events include the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County’s annual Education Conference on Saturday, July 29th at Academy of Our Lady of Peace. Attendees will hear from neurologists, medical professionals and epilepsy experts, as well as a panel of those with lived experiences. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 12 noon.
