The smell of sparkling new tennis shoes, the feel of soft warm socks and lots of happy faces are expected at San Ysidro Health’s El Zapaton “Shoe-A-Thon” in December. This drive-thru event provides new shoes, bookbags and other essentials to our children, the majority from households of this pandemic’s essential workforce. The idea for this awesome event, El Zapaton, is the brainchild of their dedicated volunteer, Rafael Garcia, a member of San Ysidro Health’s Philanthropy Leadership Council. This generous cohort of distinguished advisors provides support and guidance to further SYH’s mission of improving the health and well-being of the communities they serve with access for all.

Last year, 168 children benefited from a new pair of shoes and a backpack through a unique partnership with Skechers. This year, Rafael is teaming up with members of the Youth Philanthropy Council to distribute 500 pairs of shoes to children in the South Bay and East County region. During this time of economic hardships and uncertainty, every act of kindness and support makes a profound difference. Additional supporters include Skechers, Falck and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan.
The pandemic has disproportionately impacted the communities San Ysidro Health serves, especially Latino families and their beloved children. As a trusted provider of vital healthcare in San Diego’s COVID-19 “hot spots” in South, Central, Southeastern San Diego to rural East County, San Ysidro Health is on the frontlines responding to the COVID-19 health crisis providing compassionate and expert medical care.
Today, you can help make a difference in the wellbeing of approximately 35,000 children in their care. Many of San Ysidro Health’s patient families are essential workers and continue to work in high contact jobs to provide housing and food for their children during the COVID-19 pandemic. But they can’t do it alone.
In response, San Ysidro Health has established the Nuestros Niños COVID-19 Relief Campaign to help continue to provide essential health services and other resources in the safest manner to all families in need of their services including rural families in East County. The Nuestros Niños COVID-19 Relief Campaign helps support COVID-19 testing and follow-up care, and provides additional essential resources such as food and basic necessities. San Ysidro Health invites you to join together and give in any capacity: as an advocate, volunteer by donating your time and skills, or by giving to help meet the needs of vulnerable families. For more information about San Ysidro Health, please visit www.syhealth.org or call (619) 662-4100.
