The Echo, directed by the Mexican-Salvadoran filmmaker Tatiana Huezo, is one of the films selected for the San Diego Latino Film Festival 2024 Spotlight Section, a program that gives a Panorama of the best Latin American films of 2023, offering boundary-pushing propositions from exciting, diverse, award-winning, and established cinematic voices from our continent. The Echo premiered last year at the Encounters Section of Berlinale-Berlin International Film Festival where the director won the Award for Best Documentary Feature.
The film takes place in the remote village of El Echo that exists outside of time, the children care for the sheep and their elders. While the frost and drought punish the land, they learn to understand death, illness and love with each act, word and silence of their parents. A story about the echo of what clings to the soul, about the certainty of shelter provided by those around us, about rebellion and vertigo in the face of life. About growing up.
The director Tatiana Huezo graduated from the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica and has a Master’s Degree in Creative Documentary from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. Her work has been widely recognized around the world and acknowledged by the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences with eight Ariel awards; among them Best Documentary and Best Director for Tempestad, which premiered in the 66th Berlinale Forum; as well as Best Film for Prayers for the Stolen, which premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes Film Festival, where it received a special mention from the jury.

El Eco, dirigida por la productora mexicana-salvadoreña Tatiana Huezo, fue una de las películas seleccionada para la sección Spotlight del Festival de Cine Latino de San Diego 2024, un programa que brinda una mirada sobre las mejores películas latinas del 2023, con propuestas que llevan a límite situaciones de manera diversa, excitante, merecedoras de galardones y que establecen nuevas voces dentro de la industria de nuestro continente. El Eco tuvo su premier el año pasado en el Festival Internacional Berlinale-Berlin en la sección Encounters, donde la directora se llevó el premio al Mejor Largometraje Documental.
La película transcurre en el remoto pueblo atemporal de El Eco, donde los niños cuidan ovejas y a sus mayores. Con la sequía y las heladas azotando la tierra, ellos aprenden y comprenden la muerte, las enfermedades, el amor en cada acto, palabra y silencio de sus padres. Una historia sobre el eco de lo que reverbera en el alma, sobre la certeza del refugio que nos brindan los que nos rodean, sobre la rebelión y el vértigo de enfrentar la vida, sobre el crecer y madurar.
La directora Tatiana Huezo se graduó del Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica y cuenta con una maestría en Creatividad en Documentales otorgado por la Universidad Pompeu de Barcelona. Su trabajo ha sido ampliamente reconocido en el mundo y en especial por la Academia Mexicana de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas con ocho premios Ariel, entre los cuales está el de Mejor Documental y Mejor directora por La Tempestad, presentada en el 66° Foro del Berlinale, premio a la Mejor Película por Oraciones por los Robados que fuera presentada en Un Certain Regard en el Festival de Cannes, donde recibió una mención especial por parte de los jurados.
Desde 2010, la revista Giving Back, con mucho orgullo es uno de los patrocinadores del Festival Latino de San Diego.
