CHANGING LIVES IT’S OUR MISSION
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego has been changing the lives of young people in San Diego County since 1941. Their enriching afterschool programs focus on academic success, good character, and healthy lifestyles. They transform young people’s lives by helping them grow up to be caring, productive, and successful citizens of their communities. For many families, the Boys & Girls Clubs offer the only safe after-school option for their children – a safe, nurturing, supportive environment where young people can flourish. For many, this becomes a “home away from home,” and their steppingstone to a brighter and more promising future. Their members represent all social, economic and ethnic backgrounds who seek the same thing we all do; a chance to belong, to develop their skills and abilities – a chance to be somebody.
Over the last few months, as they have shifted and adapted to a new normal of youth development under COVID safety restrictions, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego has found their staff and management team to be flexible and willing to go the extra mile to ensure that children all over San Diego are given the opportunity to attend full-day care at a location near to them. Though some of their Clubhouses remain closed at this time, they have been able to reopen 6 Clubhouses and 5 on-campus programs. Their programs have been retrofitted to ensure small, stable group sizes that offer full day activities, including Distance Learning. Throughout all the changes they have made for safety, their goal remains the same: to offer a safe place where kids can learn, be active and have meaningful relationships with peers and adults.
For many families this year, the holidays are going to be a particularly difficult time. The team at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego strives to make the holidays a special time for their members and their families through holiday parties, gift giving, shopping trips, food collection and other activities which help ease the challenges they face. “Three of my grandkids have been attending the Conrad Prebys Escondido Branch since it reopened. They are having a great time. They have been starved for interaction with other children. What a blessing for the community that you have found a way to keep the Club open.” – An Escondido Club Member’s Grandfather
