Established in 1961, Home of Guiding Hands (HGH) stands as one of the largest non-profit organizations dedicated to serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, presently serving over 4,500 individuals across San Diego and Imperial Counties.

For more than 55 years, Home of Guiding Hands has successfully raised vital funds for its programs and services through its highly anticipated annual gala. In 1963, HGH introduced its first event, the Lampshade Headdress Ball, where attendees creatively adorned lampshades with dolls, ribbons, fabric, and even built them as tall as 3 feet. A spirited competition for the “Best Lampshade Headdress” ensued, capturing the guests’ enthusiasm.

The event evolved over the years, leading to the establishment of the annual “Heart & Hand Ball” in 1975. This signature occasion became a highlight, featuring lively auctions, a cocktail reception, honoree program, dinner, and dancing.

The 25th-anniversary gala, themed “Silver Soirée” was a black-tie affair recognized the dedication of honorees spanning the past 25 years.
Continuing this rich tradition, Home of Guiding Hands proudly announces its 50th golden anniversary gala, themed “Glitz & Glam” scheduled for April 27th 2024, at the Pendry Hotel in Downtown San Diego. The event promises a cocktail hour at the exclusive Oxford Social Club, offering specialty crafted drinks and hors d’oeuvres. The main festivities will include a delightful dinner, luscious desserts, silent and live auctions, and entertainment by the Mighty Untouchables.

These galas transcend fundraising for Home of Guiding Hands; they serve as engaging community events, celebrating both those served by the organization and those supporting it. Each year, the gala recognizes an individual for exceptional contributions to the intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) community. From Hank Bauer and Tim Flannery to Carol LeBeau, Rich & Lynda Kerr, and Dave & Charlene Walker & Family, the list continues to honor community heroes, fostering appreciation for their commitment and inspiring the next generation to drive positive transformations within the IDD community.
