Continuing its Mission in Supporting Students and Educators
Opportunity – a word that carries so much meaning for the Cal Coast Cares Foundation.
The foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, has awarded scholarships and grants since 2015 to local schools, from K-12 to community colleges and local universities in San Diego and Riverside County. Student scholarships are awarded to high school students, college students and foster youth. Since its inception, over $850,000 has been awarded in student scholarships and educator grants combined – all in the name of expanding opportunities for learning.

To support the Cal Coast Cares Foundation’s work, the team is excited to host its 6th Annual Golf Tournament at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club in San Diego, California on Monday, August 21, 2023! This location offers terrific views and challenging play for golfers at every skill level. The tournament is an opportunity for the public to play on a private course that they may not otherwise have a chance to experience. This truly makes the event a special occasion. Golfers will enjoy breakfast and lunch, fun on-course contests, an opportunity to bid on auction items, and a post-event banquet. The tournament will help raise funds to support the foundations’ mission. This year, the presenting sponsor is Mastercard. Other key sponsors include PSCU, Sharp Health Plan, ANI Services, Strategic Resource Management, HUB International, COX Business, ALM First, SWBC, TruStage, and Palo Alto Networks.
Last year, there was a record turnout of over 160 golfers who spent time on the golf course for a meaningful cause. Attendees traveled from as far as Tennessee to enjoy the company of golfers from across San Diego County and Southern California. Due to the generosity of the event’s benefactors, over $130,000 was raised.
“We are proud to continue the work of our credit union’s founders, who were local educators, in supporting students who want to pursue higher education, and teachers who are dedicated to innovative teaching in the classroom. The impact that the foundation makes year after year is truly profound,” Rene McKee, Sr. Vice President of Community & Public Relations at Cal Coast Credit Union, and Foundation Board Member shared with GB Magazine.
A past scholarship recipient, Gabrielle Dowers, shared how the award has made an impact in her life, “This scholarship truly helped make college possible for me. I was unsure about how I was going to find that last little bit of needed money for tuition, and the scholarship came at just the right time.”
Another past scholarship recipient, Giovanni Rodriguez, said, “Thank you for believing in a first-generation low-income student who is ready to contribute to something greater than himself. This scholarship has made my efforts validated!”
In addition to scholarships, teacher grants fund classroom activities focused on STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts and Math) subject-matters. These grants have facilitated dynamic learning tools including hydroponic greenhouse projects, robotics, chemistry kits, and much more.
