BLCI Graduation
For more than 26 years, Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI) has been serving students and their families in our communities in an effort to break the cycle of poverty by preparing underserved students to be the first in their families to go to college through after school programs that begin in third grade. BLCI’s programs focus on the ABCs of College Success: Academics, Behavior, and College and Career Readiness.
BLCI’s elementary students primarily focus on the “A” of the ABC’s – Academics. Students work alongside tutors and the elementary school specialist to build a solid academic foundation. In middle school, they shift to “B” – Behavior. This pivotal time allows students to learn more about themselves and their community.
In high school, students begin to focus on college applications and examine the “C” – College and Career Readiness. Specialists work with the students to ensure they have what they need to complete admission requirements, write strong admission essays and have a general idea about what they may want to study or do for a career. After spring break of their 11th grade year, students transition to the College Success Program, where they receive increased individual supports as they submit their college applications and apply for scholarships.
While 95% of the families that they serve are considered low-income, their only pre-requisite to be admitted to the program is that the student is a first-generation college student. Parents also are required to “volunteer” 30 hours per year with BLCI, with opportunities ranging from actual volunteer assistance, to participating in workshops to help them learn new skills.
BLCI is proud to announce another successful year! Their Class of 2022 has recently graduated, and 100% will be going to college this fall.

Desde hace más de 26 años que el Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI) se encuentra al servicio de estudiantes y familias de esta comunidad, buscando superar el ciclo vicioso de pobreza a través de la educación superior, logrando que muchos estudiantes sean los primeros en sus familias en acceder a la educación universitaria. Esto se logra por medio de programas extra curriculares que comienzan en tercer grado y se basan en el ABC del éxito universitario: los académicos, la conducta y la preparación hacia las carreras y la universidad.
Los estudiantes de primaria de BLCI comienzan con la “A” del ABC: los académicos. Los estudiantes trabajan a la par de tutores y de especialistas en escuela primaria para construir una sólida base académica. Luego, en la escuela media pasan a “B”: conducta, momento de inflexión donde se les permite conocerse más y conocer más a su comunidad.
Ya en el secundario comienzan a enfocarse en “C”: preparación para las carreras y la universidad. Los especialistas trabajan junto a los estudiantes para asegurar que tengan todo lo necesario para completar las solicitudes de admisión, escribir sólidos ensayos de admisión y tener una idea general sobre lo que implica lo que quieren estudiar o hacer laboralmente. Luego de las vacaciones de primavera del 11° grado, los estudiantes pasan al College Success Program, donde reciben una mayor atención personalizada mientras envían sus solicitudes a las distintas universidades y aplican para diferentes becas.
Aunque el 95% de las familias asistidas pertenecen al grupo de bajos ingresos, el único requisito para ingresar al programa es que el estudiante que se inscribe sea la primera generación en ingresar a la universidad. También se les pide a los padres que ofrezcan 30 horas “voluntarias” por año a BLCI, con opciones desde una verdadera asistencia voluntaria, a participar de talleres donde se los ayuda a aprender nuevas habilidades.
BLCI tiene el orgullo de anunciar un nuevo exitoso año, con el 100% de los alumnos de la camada 2022 asistiendo a la universidad el próximo otoño.
