Hope, Persistence & Inspiration
An odyssey of pain, struggle, heartache and determination has become one of hope and healing for 15-year-old Anna, from Juba, South Sudan.
Anna was 12 years old and alone in a shack of a refugee camp in Juba when her life changed. She was cooking food when she suffered an epileptic seizure and fell face first into a blazing fire that consumed the left side of her face, eye, nose, ear and mouth leaving her terribly deformed. She was taken to a hospital in Juba where they did not have the know-how or facilities to care for her burns.
There she received ordinary dressing, and after a long time the wounds closed, leaving disfiguring permanent scars and constant pain. The upper and lower eyelids were constricted, she could not open or close her eye and part of her mouth was permanently open with her teeth exposed. She started covering her face to keep the flies and dust away. She dropped out of school and became a beggar. Anna’s parents were unable to care for her due to the ongoing war in South Sudan.
Six months after the fire, the nonprofit Confident Children out of Conflict discovered Anna and stepped in to help her. “There is a terrible situation in Juba with on-going conflict and no social services,” said Cathy Groenendijk, Executive Director of Confident Children out of Conflict. After initially accepting her as a patient, a children’s hospital in the United States had to subsequently deny care. Anna, who had become hopeful, slipped back into depression, anger and hopelessness and was reduced to a masked beggar around the refugee camp.
In February 2018, Bill Cook, founder of The Bill Cook Foundation, and Groenendijk helped Anna travel to Uganda to have some palliative surgery. In November 2018, doctors said there was nothing more they could do for Anna. Cook contacted Papa Doug Manchester, with the Manchester Charitable Foundation, which lead to scheduling a meeting with Harry Leibowitz, Co-Founder of World of Children.
In January 2019, the three men met in San Diego and put together a plan of action to help Anna. They concluded that COANIQUEM, a World of Children Honoree located in Santiago, Chile would be the best location for her treatment. Dr. Jorge Rojas-Zegers, founder of COANIQUEM, and world-renowned plastic surgeon and specialist in treating children with severe burns, agreed to help Anna right away. “The Manchester Charitable Foundation and World of Children share the joint belief that no child is disposable,” said Leibowitz.
Cook added, “It is so exciting that we are so close to what was a dream just a few months ago when Papa Doug gathered some folks together in his office in San Diego.”
After nearly three and a half years of struggle for survival, coordination with six organizations, four countries, three languages, an arduous process of obtaining sufficient paperwork and visas for Anna, and the assistance of more than 30 people, Anna was finally admitted into COANIQUEM on September 9, 2019 to begin the long process of treatment and recovery. “COANIQUEM is a holistic mission with a heart of Christ,” said Groenendijk. “It has a unique combination of good things; beauty, creativity, professionalism, effectiveness, love, compassion and child friendliness.”

Una odisea de dolor, lucha, angustia y determinación que se ha transformado en esperanza y sanación para Anna, una joven de 15 años proveniente de Juba, sur de Sudan.
Anna tenía 12 años, estaba sola en un campo de refugiados de Juba cuando su vida tomó un giro aún más drástico. Mientras cocinaba sobre un fuego sufrió un ataque de epilepsia y con su cara cayó sobre el fuego que le quemó el lado izquierdo de su cara, ojo, nariz, oreja y boca, dejándola terriblemente deformada. La llevaron a un hospital en Juba donde no tenían los conocimientos o posibilidades para cuidar de sus quemaduras.
En ese hospital le hicieron las curaciones más básicas y luego de un largo tiempo las heridas se cerraron, dejándola desfigurada con cicatrices y dolores permanentes. Sus párpados quedaron contraídos, no permitiéndole abrir o cerrar bien su ojo y parte de su boca quedó de tal manera que no la podía cerrar dejando sus dientes siempre expuestos. Todo esto hizo que comenzara a taparse la cara para evitar el polvo y las moscas, dejando la escuela y convirtiéndose en mendigo. Los padres de Anna no podían cuidar de ella debido a la guerra en Sudan.
Seis meses luego del accidente, la organización sin fines de lucro Confident Children out of Conflict descubrió a Anna y decidieron ayudarla. “La situación en Juba es terrible debido al conflicto existente y a la ausencia de servicios sociales “comenta Cathy Groenendjik, directora ejecutiva de Confident Children out of Conflict. Inicialmente un hospital infantil de Estados Unidos la aceptó como paciente, pero luego le negaron la atención que necesitaba. Anna, que había albergado esperanzas, cayó en la depresión, el enojo y la desesperanza volviendo a convertirse en un mendigo sin rostro dentro del campo de refugiados.
En febrero del 2018, Bill Cook, fundador de Bill Cook Foundation junto con Groenendjik ayudaron a Anna a viajar a Uganda donde recibiría algunas cirugías paliativas. En noviembre del 2018 los doctores le dijeron que ya no podían hacer nada más por Anna. Cook se puso en contacto con Papa Doug Manchester y la Manchester Charitable Foundation que llevó a la organización de una entrevista con Harry Leibowitz, fundador de World of Children.
En enero del 2019, estos tres hombres se reunieron en San Diego y diseñaron un plan de acción para ayudar a Anna, decidiendo que el mejor lugar para ayudar a Anna sería COANIQUEM, un Premiado de World of Children de Santiago de Chile. El Dr. Jorge Rojas-Zegers, mundialmente conocido cirujano plástico especialista en quemaduras en niños y fundador de COANIQUEM inmediatamente decidió ayudar a Anna. “La Manchester Charitable Foundation y World Children comparten la visión de que ningún niño es prescindible” dijo Leibowitz. Cook agregó que “es muy emocionante verse tan cerca de lograr un sueño que se inició hace unos meses, cuando nos reunimos con Papa Doug en su oficina de San Diego”.
Luego de casi tres años y medio luchando por sobrevivir, coordinaciones con seis organizaciones, cuatro países, tres idiomas y un arduo proceso de papelería y visas para Anna y la ayuda de más de 30 personas, finalmente el 9 de septiembre fue admitida a COANIQUEM, donde comenzó un largo proceso de tratamientos y recuperaciones. “COANIQUEM es una misión holística con el corazón de Cristo” comenta Groenendjik, “tiene la combinación única de cosas buenas: belleza, creatividad, profesionalismo, eficiencia, amor, compasión y cordialidad infantil”.
