San Ysidro Health’s Philanthropy Leadership Council

San Ysidro Health (SYHealth) is not just a healthcare provider; it is a lifeline for underserved and vulnerable communities in San Diego County. Its mission is clear: enhance health, ensure access for all and be a beacon of hope for those who need it most. At the heart of this mission stands the Philanthropy Leadership Council (PLC), a dedicated network of community leaders who volunteer to amplify SYHealth’s impact. The PLC plays a pivotal role in strengthening the organization, raising its profile, and spearheading major fundraising efforts.

Initially rooted in South San Diego County, SYHealth expanded its reach into the Central, Southeastern and Eastern regions and, more recently, merged with Mountain Health Community Services to extend services to the rural Mountain Empire. Today, SYHealth’s clinics span the entire county, serving culturally and geographically diverse families living in urban, suburban and rural areas.

What distinguishes SYHealth is its dedication to addressing the specific needs of the 145,000 lives in their care, many of whom face daunting healthcare disparities. In 2022, SYHealth’s demographics told a story of resilience: over 90% of patients lived below 200% of the federal poverty level, the majority reliant on Medi-Cal, and nearly 1 in 5 were uninsured.

A noteworthy aspect of SYHealth’s approach is its emphasis on diversity, equity, inclusion and representation. It prioritizes hiring individuals from the communities it serves, fostering trust and highlighting the importance of representation in healthcare and social services.

The PLC is a cornerstone of SYHealth’s mission. These dedicated volunteers work tirelessly on initiatives such as the annual El Zapatón, Health and Wellness Fair in December and the upcoming Emerald Ball Gala.

The 5th Annual El Zapatón (“The Big Shoe” in Spanish) created by PLC

member and long-time supporter Rafael Garcia, is a heartwarming event

providing children aged 5-17 with critical wellness screenings, immunizations,

gift cards for new shoes, and other essential services. For families with limited

budgets, this initiative bridges the gap, offering children a simple joy—a

new pair of shoes, especially impactful during the holidays. http://www.syhealth.org/events

The Emerald Ball, SYHealth’s largest and most successful fundraising signature event, is scheduled for August 10, 2024.                  Celebrating the organization’s 55th anniversary, all proceeds will support the mission of healthcare for all.

The PLC’s involvement extends beyond fundraising; they create opportunities to connect with stakeholders, raise SYHealth’s profile, and ensure the organization continues its vital work – offering accessible healthcare, addressing community-specific needs, and promoting diversity and representation.

As SYHealth’s reach expands, the PLC remains indispensable. Together, they are paving the way for a healthier, more equitable future for San Diego County’s most vulnerable populations.

You can be part of this mission. Whether by joining the PLC, volunteering at El Zapatón, or attending the Emerald Ball, your support will make a lasting impact.
