America’s Finest Race
When San Diego native Christy Carreño started the Beach and Bay Half Marathon, her dream was to create the ultimate running event that she would want to participate in. The race, which will take place on April 10 and includes 5k and 10k options, starts at Tecolote Shores Park and winds its way along many of the iconic beaches and bays of San Diego.
What earned Beach and Bay the runner up position for Runner’s World magazine’s Best International Running Event award is the attention to detail. Carreño has been producing events, including galas, conferences, races, book signings, and even a food and wine festival, in and around San Diego for decades. Runners make such an effort to get to the race, she explains, “They train for months. Many people fly to San Diego specifically to participate. And then they get up before dawn to give their all to the race. “I don’t want them to just get their medal and be on their way. The finish line is just the beginning.” The finish line festival at Beach and Bay will feature live music, dozens of vendors, and a beer garden serving artisan brews. “I try to create an atmosphere that invites our runners to stay and celebrate their accomplishments.”
A portion of the proceeds from Beach and Bay will go toward supporting several local charities, including Freedom Dogs, a nonprofit dedicated to the training of Service Dogs that help wounded American military heroes transitioning from military to civilian life, a cause close to Carreño’s heart, since she raised a service dog. Being part of the service dog community, Carreño shares, “I’ve seen first-hand how a service dog can change a person’s life.” Freedom Dogs, along with their trainers, provide wounded warriors with the physical and emotional support they need to successfully transition back into civilian life. “The fact that I can contribute to that transition in some small way through Beach and Bay makes our work that much more satisfying.”

Cuando Christy Carreño, nativa de San Diego, empezó con la maratón Beach and Bay Half, su sueño era el de crear el más importante evento de carreras que la tentaría a ella a participar. La carrera se realizará el 10 de abril e incluye opciones de 5k y 10k, con largada en Tecolote Shores Park y serpenteando su trayecto a lo largo de muchas playas y bahías emblemáticas de San Diego.
Lo que a esta carrera le ganó la reputación de Mejor Evento Internacional de Running según la revista Runner´s World Magazine, es la atención puesta en los detalles. Desde hace décadas, Carreño viene produciendo eventos en San Diego como galas, carreras, conferencias, autografiado de libros, inclusive un festival de vinos y comida. “Los corredores entrenan durante meses. Mucha gente vuela a San Diego solamente para participar de la carrera, levantándose antes del amanecer para dejar todo en la carrera, no quiero que solo reciban una medalla y se vayan. La llegada es solo el comienzo” el festival que comienza a partir de la llegada en Beach Bay ofrece música en vivo, docenas de puestos de ventas y un espacio de cerveza artesanal. “Trato de crear una atmósfera que invite a nuestros corredores a quedarse y celebrar sus logros”.
Parte de las recaudaciones logradas por Beach and Bay se destinan a colaborar con distintas instituciones de caridad locales como Freedom Dogs, organización que entrena Perros de Asistencia para ayudar a héroes militares americanos en la transición desde el ejército a la vida civil, una causa cercana emocionalmente a Carreño ya que ella misma crio un perro de asistencia. Siendo parte de la comunidad de los perros de asistencia nos comparte de primera mano “he visto como un perro de asistencia puede cambiar la vida de una persona”. Freedom Dogs junto con sus entrenadores, brindan a nuestros guerreros el apoyo físico y emocional que necesitan para lograr la transición a la vida civil de manera exitosa. El hecho de poder contribuir con esta transición de algún modo como es a través de Beach and Bay, hace nuestra tarea mucho más satisfactoria”.
