Where Dreams Take Flight
Looking back on the history of flight, one thing is clear: the sky was never just the limit. Once mankind got off the ground, the race was on to go beyond.
From the history’s first powered flight by Orville and Wilbur Wright at Kill Devil Hills, in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17, 1903, to Charles Lindbergh’s solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Paris in the Spirit of St. Louis from May 20 to 21, 1927, aviation innovators have continued to explore the limits of Earth’s endless boundaries. Five years after Lindbergh’s epic accomplishment, in 1932, Amelia Earhart, piloting a Lockheed Vega 5B, made a nonstop solo transatlantic flight, becoming the first woman to achieve such a feat.
The exploration of the heavens was just beginning. A mere 20 years after Lindbergh’s crossing, Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in level flight for the first time in a Bell X-1 in the skies over Southern California on October 14, 1947. Just 22 years later, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the Moon on July 21, 1969, with Armstrong issuing one of mankind’s most famous quotes: “That’s one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind.”
The spirit and quest for adventure remains alive today in modern “star explorers,” as America sets its sights on putting astronauts back on the Moon in the next few years and eventually on Mars in the not too distant future.
Today, through ABOVE AND BEYOND, an immersive, educational and enjoyable special exhibition and experiential journey at the San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park, the goals and visions of these explorers continue to propel aerospace innovators onward and upward, inspiring children and young adults to imagine future careers in aerospace, and helping to support educators in building Science, Technology, Engineering and Math awareness and skills among students and critical thinkers.
ABOVE AND BEYOND ignites a passion for mankind’s greatest adventure: our journey of flight into the heavens and celebrates the power of innovation to make dreams take flight and features immersive simulations, interactive design challenges, iconic historical touchstones, visionary concepts and inspiring stories from game-changing innovators, past and present.
ABOVE AND BEYOND encourages visitors of all ages and backgrounds to imagine what it takes to make the ‘impossible’ possible. Just like the Wright Brothers, Lindbergh, Earhart, Yeager, Aldrin, Armstrong and the future explorers currently on their way to paving new paths in the skies above.

Si miramos en retrospectiva la historia del vuelo algo está claro, el cielo nunca fue el límite. Una vez que la humanidad despegó del suelo comenzó la carrera.
Desde el primer vuelo a motor el 7 de diciembre de 1903, de Orville y Wilbur Wright en Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Carolina del Norte, al vuelo en solitario a través del Atlántico desde Nueva York a París de Charles Lindbergh en el Spirit of St. Louis el 20 y 21 de mayo de 1927, los innovadores de la aviación han continuado explorando los límites de las eternas fronteras terrestres. En 1932, cinco años después del épico logro de Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart pilotando un Lockheed Vega 58, hizo un vuelo transatlántico sin escalas, convirtiéndose en la primera mujer en lograr semejante proeza.
La exploración de los cielos recién comenzaba. Tan solo 20 años después del cruce de Lindbergh, un 14 de octubre de 1947, Chuck Yeager rompió por primera vez la barrera del sonido en un vuelo nivelado en un Bell X-1, sobrevolando el sur de California. 22 años más tarde, Neil Armstrong y Buzz Aldrin pisaron la luna un 21 de julio de 1969, y gracias a Armstrong quedó para la historia una de sus más famosas frases “un pequeño paso para un hombre y uno gigantesco para la humanidad”.
El espíritu de búsqueda y aventura se mantiene vivo en los modernos exploradores estelares y con visiones como la de Norteamérica: poner astronautas en la luna en los próximos años y eventualmente llegar a Marte en un futuro no tan lejano.
Hoy, gracias a ABOVE AND BEYOND, una exhibición especial inmersiva educativa y viaje de experiencias espaciales que ofrece el Museo del Aire y del Espacio de Parque Balboa, los objetivos y visiones de estos exploradores se continúan; promoviendo las innovaciones aeroespaciales, inspirando a niños y jóvenes adultos a imaginar carreras aeroespaciales, colaborando con los educadores en la construcción de conocimiento y conciencia sobre la importancia de las áreas de ciencias, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas y desarrollando el fundamental pensamiento crítico.
ABOVE AND BEYOND enciende la pasión por una de las más grandes aventuras de la humanidad: nuestro viaje a las estrellas y celebra el poder de la innovación que permite a los sueños tomar vuelo gracias a simulaciones inmersivas, desafíos de diseños interactivos, piedras angulares históricas, conceptos visionarios e inspiradoras historias de los innovadores que han cambiado el rumbo de la historia, tanto del pasado como del presente.
ABOVE AND BEYOND quiere que visitantes de todas las edades y orígenes imaginen que lo “imposible” puede ser posible, como lo pensaron los hermanos Wright, Lindbergh, Earhart, Yeager, Aldrin, Armstrong y los futuros exploradores que hoy en día están preparando el camino hacia un futuro estelar.
