15th Annual Hallo-Wine Fall Festival
Home Start’s signature fundraiser
San Diego non-profit Home Start (www.home-start.org) is thrilled to celebrate its 50th anniversary year in 2022. For five decades, its caring staff have devoted themselves to preventing child abuse by strengthening families and serving local communities. Home Start’s seven core programs play a crucial role in empowering local children and families to escape the cycles of poverty, abuse, homelessness and neglect.
In April of this year, the agency purchased its 5th multi-unit residential property to provide housing and wraparound supportive services to survivors of domestic violence. The generous support of local individuals and caring foundation partners made this possible. The first young women and children in the program have just moved into their new homes!
Here is one of their stories.
- “Jocelyn” had finally escaped an abusive relationship and was trying to stay safe by sleeping in her trailer near an East County industrial park. She sought local resources and connected to Home Start’s Homeless Outreach Specialist Jojo. He immediately began to seek out housing options. Just when things were looking up, Jocelyn’s abuser found her and burned down her trailer. Thankfully, she escaped again. Jojo and Home Start staff quickly provided Jocelyn with an emergency motel voucher to help her get off the streets. Then, a week later, the agency moved this brave young woman into her own studio apartment in their newly-purchased property. She will continue working alongside her Home Start Case Manager on creating a plan for employment and achieving steps for her long-term safety / self-sufficiency.
As the housing crisis, inflation and domestic violence continue to plague the most underserved neighbors in our community, please help more youth, children and families by participating in Home Start’s 15th Annual Hallo-Wine Fall Festival. Spend the afternoon outdoors at the Historic Burnham House in Balboa Park on Saturday, October 22nd in recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Enjoy a delicious selection of food samples along with boutique wines, handcrafted beers, local spirts, live music, a special update on Home Start programs and a silent auction. Another Home Start client will also share their story of how caring partners like you have helped them. All proceeds support local children and families.
