The J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) is advancing the science of genomics through bold innovations. The mission of JCVI is to understand more about the biological world, and to develop unique insights and answers about disease, health and the environment for the benefit of all. JCVI believes every child deserves access to hands-on, inquiry-based science experiences. This is the philosophy that drives their longstanding education program. Thanks to donor, Una Davis, JCVI’s researchers and staff are able to deliver science concepts directly to students.
10 Things About Una Davis & J. Craig Venter Institute
#1 I grew up in the western suburbs of Boston.
#2 If I did not live in San Diego, I would choose Washington, DC. The city has so much to offer, and I would be closer to family.
#3 I am a serious history buff. George Washington is my great uncle (9 times over) on my mother’s side, and my family and I visit Mt. Vernon every year for various events.
#4 I wish I could outlaw political parties and make everything nonpartisan.
#5 I have a dog named Blake, after one of my favorite tennis players, James Blake and an orange tabby cat named Harry, after the prince.
#6 If I have free time, I read. It is how I learn about the world, past and present.
#7 I would like to master golf; I find it very humbling!
#8 Our Kids to the King Tide program gave hundreds of fourth and fifth grade students from Title One schools the opportunity to visit the ocean and explore alongside oceanographers, microbiologists and other experts. They walked the tide pools, experienced a plankton tow, and collected samples of ocean water. Using the mobile lab, which is a modified motor coach outfitted with laboratory equipment, students had the opportunity to investigate their samples on microscopes and were taught how to record their findings in lab journals.
#9 An important part of JCVI’s scientific mission is to provide science education and training programs to both enhance science literacy for the public and to help train the next generation of scientists.
#10 The JCVI Science Education Program provides broad-based community resources for science education to students, teachers, and scientists in San Diego County as well as in the Washington, D.C. Metro area. We believe that some of the most valuable contributions our researchers can make to science happen outside of the lab when we connect with our community to inspire and encourage exploration of the wonder and potential of the natural world. We are committed to providing access to science for all.
