10 Things About Stephen S. Korniczky & Diabetes Research Connection

The mission of Diabetes Research Connection (DRC) is to connect donors with early-career scientists enabling them to perform peer-reviewed, innovative research to prevent and cure type 1 diabetes (T1D), minimize its complications, and improve the quality of life for those living with the disease. Stephen S. Korniczky is Vice-Chair on the Diabetes Research Connection Board of Directors.
#1 I was born and raised in New York City. I earned an engineering degree from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and a law degree from SUNY – Buffalo in upstate New York. After law school, I moved to California and have called it home ever since.
#2 When I was 6 years old, my father packed me, my sister, three brothers and our German Sheppard into a Volkswagen bus for a road trip to Alaska. We spent the summer camping, fishing, hiking and living out of a tent. Alaska has been my favorite travel destination ever since.
#3 In high school, I won the Outstanding Competitor award at the National AAU Junior Olympic Judo Championships.
#4 My father was a single parent. He placed incredible emphasis on getting a good education and instilled in me the idea that I could be anything I wanted to be. Until I had my own son, I do not think I realized how smart my dad was or how much time, love and effort he put into his kids.
#5 I would like to learn to play the guitar and sing at least one karaoke song that does not make people cringe.
#6 We love animals! My son Matthew has been a volunteer with Helen Woodward Animal Center for the past 4 years. We have two Jack Russel Terrier rescues named Bowie and Dixie.
#7 In third grade, my brother and I went to a wonderful summer camp because someone sponsored this opportunity for kids. That experience stuck with me. I think giving back spreads good karma and helps make our community stronger.
#8 Twenty-four years ago, my 9-year-old niece, Lauren, was diagnosed with T1D. Two years ago, my 15-year-old niece, Vivi, was also diagnosed. I have hope that we will find a cure in my lifetime. But, to do so, we have to proactively identify and support promising research.
#9 DRC-funded research projects are thoroughly vetted for scientific merit by a 50-member Scientific Review Committee of senior diabetes researchers from across the country, ensuring a high probability of successful outcomes.
#10 Many of DRC researchers have received follow-on funding of $1 million or more for a 6x return on grants.
