10 Things About Sitara Sethi & Foundation for Developmental Disabilities

The mission of the Foundation for Developmental Disabilities is to generate and distribute funds to innovative programs that enhance the quality of life for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in San Diego and Imperial Counties. The Foundation, during this fiscal year alone, has given out over $300,000 through their Help Fund Program to directly support clients of the San Diego Regional Center. Oftentimes, this funding is the only thing that prevents families from being out on the streets. Sitara Sethi serves as the Chief Executive Office at the Foundation for Developmental Disabilities.
#1 I grew up in a small town in Southern India called Ooty nestled in the mountains.
#2 I learned to play the bagpipe during my school years and was the band director in high school.
#3 I love to travel with my husband and two young sons. Growing up, I never had this opportunity so now I make it a point to enjoy every place we travel.
#4 I have always been a fan of Bob Dylan but when I just want to relax, sing along and get goofy with my kids nothing beats Maroon 5.
#5 Everyone should read “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams. It’s an extremely funny and insightful science fiction novel about getting out of your comfort zone and embracing the adventure that life brings your way.
#6 San Diego welcomed me with open arms when I moved here from India over 15 years ago. I believe that the best way to show my appreciation to the city that I now call home is by giving back and helping its communities not just grow but thrive.
#7 When I first moved to this country, I worked part-time at UCSD and my boss there – Catherine Ledford became my mentor. She showed me how to lead by example and how good leaders not only have the knowledge but also have empathy and kindness for those that work with them.
#8 There are so many worthy organizations in San Diego and Imperial Counties that provide incredible services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities that are lacking the funding to take them to the next level.
#9 I believe that grassroots organizations are essential for a thriving community and the Foundation for Developmental Disabilities’ funding is geared towards those organizations to help them provide services that are much needed for the intellectual and developmental disabilities population.
#10 The money from “Day at the Races” benefits the Help Fund Program and provides emergency relief funds for over 37,000 clients and families that are served through the San Diego Regional Center.
