10 Things About Moisés Esparza & the San Diego Latino Film Festival
#1. I was born in San Luis Potosí, Mexico but I moved to San Diego when I was six years-old. I grew up in Pacific Beach, which is still my favorite neighborhood in the city!
#2. Every day I challenge myself to be an active listener as I’ve learned it is an imperative skill to ensure success both professionally and personally.
#3. I visited Yosemite this year and it was such a life-affirming experience. It’s a great place to disconnect from outside responsibilities and contemplate your own place in the universe without spiraling into an existential crisis.
#4. Every year I think about training for a marathon– maybe 2020 will be the year I finally get serious about it!
#5. I actually enjoy taking the “long way” to get places if it means avoiding the freeway. Driving through city streets is one of life’s great pleasures for me.
#6. I ask myself if the challenges I’m facing in a particular moment will be relevant in an hour, a day, a month or a year. Most of the time the answer is “No” and I am able to relax. If I’m having a particularly challenging day, I’ll go to a boot camp or cardio class and sweat out the frustration. Then, I buy a cookie and everything is okay.
#7. I’ve been most surprised by how the birth of my nephew transformed my life, for the better. I think it’s made me more patient, caring, and loving.
#8. I remind myself that it’s impossible to be right all the time. It’s okay to be wrong. It’s humanizing, humbling and a great impetus for personal growth.
#9. Sometimes the minutiae of producing a film festival gets in the way of remembering why we have the event every year. Whenever I feel like I’m losing sight of this goal, I talk to filmgoers, check in with staff or sit in on a movie to help me re-focus and not let trivial details get in the way of accomplishing our mission.
#10. Teaching filmmaking tools to younger generations is a great way to create social change and enrich communities by creating progressive discourses about pertinent issues.
