10 Things About Merrilee Neal & Promises2Kids
“Strength doesn’t come from what you can do, it comes from overcoming the things you thought you couldn’t.” – Rikki Rogers
This year marks Promises2Kids’ 40th anniversary of creating a brighter future for foster children in San Diego County. Merrilee Neal, Vice Chair of Promises2Kids’ Board of Directors, helps make it possible for Promises2Kids to provide the hope, support, and opportunities foster children need to change their lives for the better… now and for years to come.
#1 I grew up in Glendora, California – a small community in the San Gabriel Valley east of Los Angeles.
#2 They say people come to Park City, Utah for the winters but stay for the summers. From winter skiing, great summer hiking & mountain biking to enjoying quaint walks and dinners on Main Street, we love our time in Park City.
#3 I started training at age 32 and am a fifth-degree black belt in Taekwondo. I became a nationally certified instructor and owned a martial arts studio teaching students ages 3 through adult.
#4 I would like to hone my writing skills with a goal of writing a book someday.
#5 If I have a free moment, I enjoy a walk along the coast or watching the sunset.
#6 I have a Parti Yorkie named Bobby. He came to us 7 years ago as an adorable 5-month-old puppy who needed a loving home.
#7 My husband and I were guests at the 2013 Dream On Concert Gala. I was so personally moved by the testimony of a Guardian Scholar who spoke that evening and was impressed by the dedicated support the organization provides. I have been honored to serve on the Board now for over 5 years!
#8 San Diego Business Journal named Promises2Kids the 2021 nonprofit of the year.
#9 Lane, Edward, Grant and Tommy were separated upon entering foster care and do not often see each other. During a recent visit, the four boys had lunch and enjoyed a day at the beach. As the boys walked along the pier and watched the surfers, the younger brothers were nervous to be over the open ocean, but the older brothers helped them feel comfortable. They snapped a photo at the end of the pier as they dipped their toes in the water. Thanks to supporters, Promises2Kids is able to make moments like this possible.
#10 Promises2Kids’ 2nd annual Holiday Wine Auction, gives supporters the chance to bid on various wines and champagnes from the affordable to the collectible. If you are able to donate a collectible bottle of wine or your favorite spirit, please contact the organization. Funds raised will contribute to the daily support of foster children in our community.
