Home of Guiding Hands (HGH) serves a vulnerable population of men, women and children referred by the San Diego Regional Center (SDRC). At the onset of the pandemic, HGH and SDRC joined forces to distribute PPE to the San Diego community of people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. HGH has helped individuals, families and other same-serving nonprofits stay safe with more than nine million articles of PPE. Additionally, HGH and SDRC are now conducting vaccination clinics specifically for the special needs community. Mary Miller serves as the Vice President of Risk Management & General Counsel for HGH and has dedicated her career to the long-term care industry.
10 Things About Mary Miller & Home of Guiding Hands
#1 My father was in the Air Force, so we moved every 3-4 years. My favorite place was Wiesbaden, Germany, where we lived while I was in 4th thru 7th grades.
#2 I was a High School All-American athlete for softball.
#3 I would like to master the 3-pointer in basketball!
#4 If I did not live in San Diego, I would live in Siena Italy.
#5 I am definitely a morning person.
#6 We have two rescue dogs, Patrick (15) and Stanley (14).
#7 When I have a free moment, I read or nap – sometimes both!
#8 I wish there was a law that would mandate a minimum household income that would keep up with inflation such that no person would live in poverty and everyone would have healthcare.
#9 David is 16 years old and one of the newer residents of HGH. He moved in last May and adapted quickly to a new environment away from his family and the unique conditions that resulted from the pandemic. After his arrival, the group home supported David by maintaining close contact with his family through daily virtual calls. This is David’s first experience in a residential setting. He has been very successful and has developed significant independence in many areas. He participates in daily chores such as taking clothes to the laundry, starting the washer and taking out the trash with minimal prompting and oversight from staff. David has a wonderful sense of humor and is playful in his interactions with his housemates and the team. David has increased his communication skills by expressing his needs safely and continues to build trust and rapport with staff, which has improved his ability to try new things and engage in skill-building.
#10 This year, we are hosting a Dinner Roast in honor of the 10th anniversary of our President & CEO, Mark Klaus. The “Treasure Island Dinner Roast” is a pirate-themed fundraiser to support our clients and programming.
