“Never up, never in!”

The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego is to inspire and enable youth to achieve academic success, build good character and responsible citizenship, and make healthy lifestyle choices. Throughout every hardship and the unpredictability of life, there is one thing that Club members and their families can rely on – when schools are closed, the Club is open. Lionel Deschamps has been a Corporate Board of Directors member since 2006 and is the 2022 Evening of Changing Lives Signature Event Chairperson.

#1 I am originally from Albany, New York, but my family moved to Tempe, Arizona when I was in 3rd grade.

#2 If I could give advice to my younger self it would be: “Don’t sweat the small stuff and treat everyone with kindness and respect.”

#3 My favorite travel destination is Cabo San Lucas. There is lots of great golf and I love the relaxed vibe …and the margaritas.

#4 A golf trip through Scotland is on my bucket list.

#5 My sons Jackson (10), Asher (8), and Cade (6) are my good luck charms.

#6 My wife Lauren has changed my life for the better in a hundred different ways. She always thinks about other people before herself, is always willing to help out, and is a great mother to our kids.

#7 I originally became involved with Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego through my employer, KPMG LLP – a long-time supporter. I have always leaned towards organizations that help children because children do not always have much control over their situation and circumstances.

#8 I believe it is important for people to give back to their communities in some way, be it financial support, volunteering, or both.

#9 We have a member named Katrina from Brazil who knew very little English and at first, she alienated herself while at the Club. Katrina would come to the Club crying after dealing with the anxiety of the school day. One of our staff members, Carlos, told Katrina about how they were the same in regard to coming to this country and not knowing the language. Katrina became comfortable talking with Carlos and later with the rest of the staff. Katrina’s English has increased tremendously. The Club has become a safe place for her – she can be vulnerable, but it is also the place where she has become the strongest. She has yet to miss a day coming to the Club.

#10 “An Evening of Changing Lives” represents nearly 20% of our annual fundraising. The impact of this event is felt throughout the year, and for thousands of Boys & Girls Club members in San Diego, truly Changes Lives.
