10 Things About Laura Tancredi-Baese & Home Start
#1 I grew up on Long Island, New York until I was 16. Then, my family and I moved to San Diego.
#2 It is important to have empathy, and the ability to put oneself in another person’s situation and truly understand how they feel.
#3 I absolutely love Italy and Southeast Asia. While very different regions, the warmth of the people, the delicious food, and the beautiful visuals throughout their cultures hold a special place in my heart.
#4 I have a dream to one day go on a cruise to Tahiti and Bora Bora. I was supposed to go there this summer, but with COVID-19 we have postponed our dream until traveling is once again safe.
#5 I share an inspiring quote each week with my staff. One of my favorites is: “There can be no keener revelation of society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.” – Nelson Mandela
#6 I have a feisty 10-year-old dog named Champ whom we rescued. We love him dearly.
#7 Before COVID-19, I was the lead singer in a Women’s Rock Band “Girls Gone Band” – we are all over 60!
#8 At Home Start, we are helping local families facing the crisis brought on by COVID-19. A mother and her husband lost their jobs and within a few weeks, they both contracted COVID-19. Tragically, the illness claimed his life. Hearing from our staff that her rental assistance check was ready, meant that the mother and her children would not be on the streets. Our case managers continue to work with this family to provide additional resources to help them get back to self-sufficiency.
#9 Our mission has always focused on preventing child abuse by strengthening some of San Diego’s most vulnerable families and their children. We stay true to our mission and use that as a guiding light for all we do.
#10 Funds raised from our 13th Annual Hallo-Wine Fall Festival will provide critical matching funds for families struggling with COVID—19. Our programs are addressing the dramatic increase in homelessness, domestic violence, and food insecurity faced by families who were already in crisis before the pandemic began.
