10 Things About Ingrid de Llamas & Barrio Logan College Institute

Since 1996, Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI) has provided after-school preparation programs to low-income, underserved youth and their families in San Diego. BLCI ensures its students and families, receive academic tutoring and support needed to achieve academically, graduate from high-school, and enroll in college. Ingrid de Llamas, Trustee and Board Secretary for BLCI, seeks to close the achievement gap for low-income, first-generation students; increase opportunities for underserved students; and decrease disparities in access to education resources.
#1 I grew up in Los Angeles and have been living in San Diego since 2014.
#2 If I had to choose somewhere other than San Diego, I think I might move back to Carmel-by-the-Sea where I was fortunate enough to live for a few years.
#3 I am an eighth generation Californian on my dad’s side.
#4 I would love to learn how to do glassblowing! As for a more practical skill, I would like to become fluent in Spanish.
#5 I have a ten-year-old rescue dog named Pippa. After two unfortunate run-ins with skunks, her name was changed to Pippa La Pew.
#6 My dog forces me to be a morning person as she likes to go for her first walk around 6 a.m.
#7 Susy and Pedro Villegas invited me to a BLCI event, and I was instantly impressed. As I arrived, a young man shook my hand, introduced himself as a BLCI student and asked if I would like to learn more about his school project. He looked me in the eye the entire time we spoke and ended our exchange by asking if I had any questions and if I would like to meet another student. I met several students that night, all equally impressive.
#8 I love that BLCI works with students beginning in the third grade and works with the entire family unit to see that those students have the academic and social support they need to get to and succeed in college. BLCI creates positive change not only in families, but throughout the community.
#9 Melissa enrolled in our after-school program in the third grade. She did not know what college was, but with BLCI’s support, Melissa was able to navigate the challenges of being a first-generation college student. She is a recent graduate of the University of California, Berkeley with a Master’s Degree in Social Welfare with a concentration in Strengthening Children, Youth and Families.
#10 All money raised from our Opportunity for Impact annual fundraiser will go towards our College Readiness Program.
