More than 100 years ago, Jewish Family Service (JFS) was founded to help asylum seekers from WWI. Today, aiding asylees and immigrants remains a key component of their work. JFS’ migrant shelter helps people who are staking all their hopes and dreams on making a better, safer life in the United States. Two of Emily Jennewein’s grandparents led Jewish Family Service in Massachusetts and Emily is following in their footsteps as the incoming chair for the Jewish Family Service of San Diego’s Board of Directors.

10 Things About Emily Jennewein & Jewish Family Service

#1 I grew up in Maine until I was 10, and then Washington, D.C. where my father headed an aid program for Latin America.

#2 We have lived in Atlanta and Silicon Valley, but we love it right here in Del Mar. Both my husband, Chris, and I like modern architecture. So, when our twin girls left home, we built the ultra-modern home we always wanted.

#3 I have visited several Latin American countries: Brazil, Columbia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama and Peru as a teenager; and later Argentina, Cuba and Uruguay.

#4 The last three years I have taken Spanish through UC San Diego’s Extension program. After the pandemic, I hope to study Spanish in a Latin American country.

#5 Our pandemic puppy, Razzleberry, just turned one. She is a miniature golden doodle who arrived in March.

#6 Our daughter, Penelope got us involved with Jewish Family Service through her teenage commitment to the Hand Up food pantry. At 29, she is now an elementary school teacher. Our daughter, Maddy is a scientist working with COVID-19 at a research institute in Seattle.

#7 I do water aerobics every morning. And Chris is up early, too, editing TimesOfSanDiego.com.

#8 I was president of Congregation Beth Israel during its 150th anniversary year, and I have served as president of Hillel of San Diego twice. JFS has a much wider role, of course, delivering services to people of all faiths.

#9 JFS receives countless calls from people like Cari, who was already reeling from losing her job pre-pandemic and then her husband was laid off too. It was the first time her family needed to ask for help, made even more difficult by the fact that they did not qualify for other types of assistance. She says, “Finding JFS was a blessing and takes a great deal of stress out of my daily life.”

#10 JFS has drastically modified services and programs to meet the urgent needs of our community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Funds raised from our virtual event will support the emergency effort JFS is leading to respond to the most urgent needs of our community with impactful services and compassionate care.
