“Thankfully, perseverance is a great substitute for talent.” – Steve Martin

The mission of the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank and the North County Food Bank chapter is to provide nutritious food to people in need, advocate for the hungry, and educate the public about hunger-related issues. As the CEO of the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, Casey Castillo is responsible for motivating and keeping his team focused on achieving their end goal – to alleviate food insecurity.

#1 I grew up in Porterville, California, which is a small farming community in Central California. My parents taught me many great lessons over the years, but most importantly, the values of working hard and serving others.

#2 I was runner-up in a talent show in elementary school for break dancing. I think the talent may still be there.

#3 I love traveling to Kauai, because it is relaxing and full of adventures. Plus, Kauai is less crowded when compared to the big islands of Hawaii, which enables people to experience even more of the island’s natural beauty.

#4 I have never visited Greece, but the pictures I have seen make it look amazingly beautiful…and I would love to actually walk, see and experience the places where so much history occurred.

#5 My family has three dogs (Gus, Mabel and Trudy) and one desert tortoise named Bubbles, who we inherited from my wife’s parents and is more than 50 years old.

#6 The best kind of work and service happens at the community level, and I feel it is everyone’s responsibility within the community to add to that.

#7 In March 2023, I will have been with the Food Bank for 15 years. I realized as a young professional that I wanted a career in nonprofit organizations. It is what drives me to get up each morning.

#8 The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank is currently serving 400,000 people every month throughout the county. This number includes working-poor families, seniors living on a fixed income and children living in poverty.

#9 The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank has been providing an essential service to the community of San Diego for more than 45 years. We are able to do our important work with the support of a nonprofit partner network, who helps our organization get food out into the community.

#10 Proceeds from the San Diego Food Bank’s Chefs, Corks & Craft Gala will benefit the Food Bank’s vital hunger-relief programs, including the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program, which provides weekend food-filled backpacks to children living in poverty who are at risk of hunger over the weekend when free school meals are unavailable.
