The Girl Scout Law provides us with a roadmap for life, reminding us to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, courageous and strong, and responsible for what we say and do. These qualities are more essential than ever as we learn to navigate uncertain times. Carol M. Dedrich attributes the lessons she learned as a young Girl Scout with preparing her for leadership roles in school, the military and now as CEO of Girl Scouts San Diego. Funds from the Cool Women luncheon will support Girl Scout programs in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), life skills, entrepreneurship, and outdoors, including day and resident camps.

10 Things About Carol Dedrich & Girl Scouts San Diego

#1 I grew up in Warren, Michigan, where my mom was my Girl Scout troop leader.

#2 Alex and I married in an historic church in Yorkshire, near where my Grandmother Violet was born. Our guests stayed in an 18th-century estate – think Downton Abbey. My sister Jan walked me down the aisle, and the matron of honor was Stephanie, my long-ago Girl Scout troop-mate.

#3 Scuba diving in the Galapagos Islands tops my bucket list!

#4 When we lost my sister Jan to cancer in December, Kenya came to live with Alex and me. She is a joyful reminder of my wonderful sister.

#5 I am working toward a pilot’s license. Alex flies too, and our dream is to explore Australia and South Africa together, piloting a plane from place to place.

#6 The best way for me to conquer a challenging day is to take a deep breath, count my blessings, and connect with a friend.

#7 What surprises me most about life these days is how time continues to speed up!

#8 As a Girl Scout and an Army officer in Desert Shield and Desert Storm, I discovered that service to others is my calling. Since then, I have worked for organizations that serve cancer patients, underserved communities, and youth.

#9 Tenley wanted to participate in the cookie program but was afraid she couldn’t talk to people or do the math involved. The first few times she helped a customer, she nearly cried. But, encouraged by her Daisy troop mates, she overcame her fears and soon became the first girl to call out the amount due and make change.

#10 The Gold Award is our organization’s highest honor. High school Girl Scouts earn the Gold Award by demonstrating extraordinary leadership in developing sustainable solutions to local, national and global challenges. They address teen mental health, sex trafficking, inclusive education, cyberbullying and other major issues.
