10 Things About Carol Chang &
Fleet Science Center
Sometimes you need to be silent to be heard….
For more than 47 years, the Fleet Science Center has inspired millions of people and provided access to science education. During that time, San Diego became one of the most powerful science and technology hubs in the world. Yet, California’s 8th graders rank 47th in the nation in science proficiency. While 23% of the region’s jobs require a high degree of knowledge in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), only 1% of these students are ranked by national test scores as advanced. Advisory Council Member, Carol Chang is helping the Fleet Science Center address this crisis by transforming the museum into a county-wide organization devoted to establishing and supporting communities rich in science-learning.
10 Things About Carol Chang & Fleet Science Center
#1 I was born in Los Angeles and grew up in the town of San Marino.
#2 I believe there are two essentials to help us have a satisfying and successful life: curiosity and compassion.
#3 Jeff and I have been fortunate to travel quite a bit, but our favorite destination is France, from Paris to Provence and in between.
#4 Though we like to travel, I am pretty content with a good book and the comfort of home.
#5 For sixteen years, we had a wonderful Tibetan Terrier, named Lily (who was actually a member of the Fleet Board with her own badge). Sadly, we lost her several years ago. We now have a joyous Poodle/Shih Tzu mix named Liliane.
#6 I am actually quite shy especially in large groups and with people I do not know.
#7 When I am having a challenging day, I curl up in a chair with my dog, get out my kindle and read whatever mystery story I am in the midst of.
#8 It is always a delightful and heart-warming surprise to receive an unexpected note with an expression of caring from the terrific network of folks in my life.
#9 My parents were extremely generous and philanthropy was an important value that they instilled in me from an early age. The time and treasure that I am able to give, pays back 10-fold in personal satisfaction and reward.
#10 The Fleet’s BE WiSE (Better Education for Women in Science and Engineering) program introduces young women in grades 7-12 to STEM careers and female role models. During 9th grade, Esha attended a BE WISE summer program focused on the effects of cancer on reproductive health held at UCSD Medical School. That experience helped Esha define her college and career path. After graduating from the BE WiSE program, Esha went on to graduate from UC Berkeley with a B.S. in Molecular Toxicology and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Biochemistry at Vanderbilt University.
